OKLAHOMA CITY – July 24, 2020 – The Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City sends many thanks to Sonic Drive-InThe Boeing CompanyBank of America, and Arvest Bank for their sponsorship of the Urban League’s 12th annual Back to School Bash.

Long-standing systemic health and social inequities have put some members of racial and ethnic minority groups at increased risk of contracting COVID-19. Additionally, many parents have faced a reduction in work hours, with some losing their jobs altogether. With some schools beginning live classes in the fall, the help of our generous sponsors allowed Urban League to increase its gift card amounts for the event from $25 to $50, which will provide aid to 300 low to moderate-income students in the Greater Oklahoma City area.

Although this is the 12th rendition of the event, the COVID-19 pandemic presented some unique challenges in the planning and execution of this year’s Back to School Bash. To comply with the CDC’s guidelines regarding social distancing, Urban League organized the Back to School Bash as a virtual event with online registration. Families will be able to pick up gift certificates and complimentary snack bags at a drive-through event scheduled for Saturday, July 25.

“The Back to School Bash is such an important event for our clients and community because it enriches the lives of children who need the support to go back to school,” said Dr. Valerie Thompson, Urban League president, and CEO. “This year, we are focusing on providing school clothing while practicing social distancing. We want all children to have access to proper clothing for the upcoming school year.”

Established in 1946 as a 501(c)(3) organization, the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City’s mission is to assist African Americans, other minorities, and the poor to achieve social and economic equality. The Urban League provides support to more than 8,000 clients each year through advocacy, research, and program services in five major areas: children and families, employment and training affordable housing, entrepreneurship, and urban health.
