OKLAHOMA CITY – March 11, 2015– The Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City applauds President Boren and the University of Oklahoma for their zero tolerance position and swift action against the members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the racial bigotry displayed at the University of Oklahoma. “As a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, it saddens me that the individuals involved in this unfortunate event did not see this act as harmful and disrespectful behavior,” stated Dr. Valerie Thompson, Oklahoma City Urban League president and CEO. “This reckless incident at the University of Oklahoma speaks to the continued need to have diversity and cultural sensitivity training in our state and around the Nation. This is a reminder to all of us that there is still work to do to eliminate racial and cultural hatred and intolerance.” The Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City, Inc., an affiliate of the National Urban League, is a non-profit, United Way agency partner established in Oklahoma City in 1946. The League’s mission is to assist African Americans, other minorities and the poor to achieve social and economic equality. Visit www.urbanleagueok.org for more information. ###
